Christmas spending poll
December 29, 2008Video of Marybeth getting a laptop
December 25, 2008This is totally personal…but I had to share this video of my 12 year old daughter Marybeth. She had asked for a laptop, but was totally convinced she wasn’t getting one. This is the clip of her getting it.
You have to watch all the way to the end…
O Holy Night and a “tub o butta”
December 24, 2008This is probably my favorite Christmas song of all time – and RoseAngela does an amazing job!!
Lee McDerment (@mcdzl), the worship pastor at Newspring, Twittered this the other day about this song: “Insider’s singing tip: roseangela eats a whole tub o butta before singing O Holy Night. Tubbabutta!“
Well, so far, I have been unable to sound like this – with or without the butter!
Check yourself!
December 23, 2008In the spirit of the abundant resolutions that are soon to be so boldly professed and miserably fulfilled, I thought I would share something I am doing in my own life.
I have been a goal setter for many years now. I evaluate and adjust those around this time each year. There is something about writing a goal down that makes it real. That’s not what I want to tell you about.
This year, I am asking a handful of people in my life to critique my personality – specifically the relational and intrapersonal characteristics of my personality.
One of the most difficult things to endure is personal criticism. For the love of all things Holy, why would you ever want to invite that criticism? Simple. To grow and improve.
I regularly practice this in other areas of my life, but this is a first. I am basically asking what is it about me that needs work? I don’t know how this will go, but I may share some of the responses I get if it seems worthwhile.
A jack ass and the flu
December 22, 2008Wow! I was down with the flu last week for six days…I am not good at downtime. It’s not something I excel at. Seriously! I’m good at some things…sitting still just isn’t one of them!
You know what I learned in the stillness of my silence? I’m just not that important! No, I mean it. Nothing broke…nothing ceased to function…I got a couple of phone calls with questions but the big takeaway is: the axis that the world rotates on is quite stable without me!
Sounds simple. Maybe you can’t conceive that someone would think otherwise. My guess is that most of us could use a subtle reminder that life will go on whether we get out of bed in the morning or not!
We are precious in God’s site…NEVER forget that!!! But we are not irreplaceable! He caused a jack ass to speak when he couldn’t get Balaam to do what He wanted him to – do you really think He can’t get the job done without you or me?
We must always remember that it is a privilege to serve Christ and that the honor is wholly ours – not the other way around! You can affirm your unique identity and purpose in Christ without over estimating your personal value to the cosmos.
“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8, NLT)
