Tabitha and I first visited Romania in October 2007 just as I was coming on staff at WAC.  I did several posts and video updates while we were in Romania.

This is the miracle of salvation! I don’t deserve it…but He reached in and picked me up!  He rescued me!

That’s the reason for the new song!

I can hear the music because of my experience with Him.

Everyone can’t hear the music because they have no experience with Him.

But many will…and they will put their trust in the Lord!

Then they can hear the music too!

But not until then.

I know it sometimes can be said that I hype things a little bit.  I promise this is IMPORTANT!

I am going to be sharing some big news very soon on the blog. I have to wait until we get past this weekend, but after that, I have some AWESOME stuff to share!

I KNOW…It’s a litle bit lame to throw a teaser like this out there on Friday, but I had to leak a little something.  It has been killing me not to be able to talk about it.

Monday…I promise…OK…maybe Sunday – it depends on how tired I am after church!

I had an experience with my cell phone provider (who happens to be Sprint) a couple of months ago that completely blew me away.  I want to make an application to church culture, but first let me give you the basics.

I called customer service with an issue on Tabitha‘s phone.  We have a very old plan that did not include many texting minutes.  We received a bill that has an egregious amount of charges for texting Tabitha had incurred.  We owed like $200 over our normal bill!  I called Sprint to see what we could work out.

To begin with, it was a fairly painless process.  I was prepared to be on hold and on the phone for about an hour to get this worked out. That was not what happened!

I had a live voice within 45 seconds and she promptly took my information.  She asked if she could put me on hold and I agreed while I held my breath and figured this was where the run around would start.  After all, we did go WAY over on text messaged and my phone company did nothing that would show they were at fault.  They gave us the text messages that were included in our plan and then, rightly, charged us for the messages we went over.

The young lady returned from hold after about 2 minutes and what she did blew me away.  I was expecting several possible outcomes, but not the one I got.  I thought I had a pretty good idea of the words I would hear her say.  I was not prepared to hear her say:

“I’m sorry, Mr. Lewis!”

“You’re what?”, I asked.

“I am so sorry we have not called you before now.”

“Uh…ok. Why?”

“You sir, are one of our most valued customers. As a token of our appreciation for your loyalty, we would like to give you free unlimited texting on all three of your lines!”

I said, “You would?”

She said, “Absolutely!  And please excuse us for not proactively calling you and offering this to you sooner.”

“Well…just don’t let it happen again.” – Nah! I really didn’t say that!

I was blown away by this.  I was ready and expecting all sorts of things that she could have said, but I was not prepared for her to go out of her way to accomodate me.  It was not something she had to do.  I was not going to leave Sprint if I didn’t get it handled.  But because of what they did, I may be with them forever!  I can tell you this…

It will be very difficult for someone else to convince me to leave by telling me how much they care about me when these guys have demonstrated how much they care about me.

This is the application for the church:

People are not interested in what we say we believe about the gospel.  They only (care/feel/absorb) that part of the gospel that we demonstrate.  Telling the world Jesus loves them is good.  Showing the world Jesus loves them is imperative!

Most people expect hypocrisy in the church.  Most people expect our actions to betray our words.

When our acions positively confound expectations, it opens the door for the Holy Spirit of God to do things that are beyond comprehension and in defiance of expectations.

It’s because of Chad.

Chad is the ambassador of oil change excellency!  Seriously…on a standard 1-10 scale of helpfulness…this guy is a 17 without breaking a sweat!  He embraces you when you arrive.  He remembers you.  He makes your experience memorable. You leave feeling special.

What can the Church learn?

The truth is, I could go a thousand different places in Greenville to get my oil changed….but I don’t.  I go to see a guy named Chad who changes oil at a car wash.  Why???  Because that’s where Chad is.

At the end of the day…this simple truth remains: it’s all about people!

Your services can be as snappy and current as the latest segment on E! Channel…but we’re missing the boat if we forget…it’s all about people!  People want to be welcomed.  They want to be embraced.  They want to be made to feel special.

People will get out of bed to come to a place they are welcomed.  Even if they don’t know why they are coming.

People will come to a church with less “bells & whistles” than a church down the road if they know they are wanted and will be missed if they aren’t there.

How are we doing?

It is interesting to track how people arrive to my blog through Google and other search engines. I have the ability to drill down to those kinds of stats through the hosting site I use. I found something interesting the other day…

If you take out searches for “Chris Lewis” and specific searches, one of the biggest search engine phrases that leads people to my blog is “sex in gatlinburg“! I thought that was pretty amazing!

Why does that happen and how does it point people to Jesus? Good question…I’m glad you asked!

Several months back, I did a post titled “Back from SEX in Gatlinburg” that followed up on a trip our youth at WAC had just returned from where we talked openly about the dangers of sex outside of marriage and the priority of purity.

Just to clear up any misunderstanding, let me clear up what’s happening here. Some guy (or girl?) is in Gatlinburg on business or for some other reason. They get on the internet in their hotel room and are looking for sex through prostitution. Among the various options they are presented with is a link to my blog. I just checked on Google and if you type the phrase “sex in gatlinburg”, my blog entry is on the front page.

When they end up on my blog, they read quotes from the messages that weekend from Chuck Bridges and Ricky Motes. They potentially click on other links.

Maybe they stay a while. Maybe they get interested.

Maybe the Holy Spirit speaks to them in that moment in that place.

Maybe a husband refrains from making a mistake he can’t take back. Maybe a father decides to honor his son or daughter by being faithful and pure.

Maybe a young lady considering selling herself for money realizes she is a Princess in the eyes of her King and she is precious and worth so much more than the cash she needs.

Maybe someone is reading this right now…and you needed to know that.

Maybe you just needed to know that someone is praying for you… right now… this moment…

Praying that you will make the right decision. God made you far too precious to live so cheaply.

Man – we need to be thankful for the freedom we have here in America – but we also need to realize that those around us desperately need to experience life and freedom in Christ just like this guy!

Our mission statement at WAC is “doing whatever it takes to reach whoever we can with the hope found in Jesus Christ”. This morning we learned a little about how we view the “Extend” portion of our strategy.  I firmly believe that “The Church” will explode when believers join together and accept responsibility for extending the love of Christ on a personal level – rather than leaving it up to the professionals.

The task is too great…and there are far too many people who need Jesus to sit around and wait on someone else to do it.  We all have a position to play!  I am honored to serve with so many awesome people who “get it” at WAC!

Yesterday 35 people from WAC flew to San Diego to work with Elevate Church and Lead Pastor Kevin Campbell to help them prepare for their launch in January.  We video conferenced with the team live this morning in both services!  It was amazing – and best of all…FREE!

It was the last time for me because it was the last time for her. Yesterday she was five…today she is six!

I spent some time with one of my best friends in the world over this past weekend.  He has a new daughter and Tabitha and I must have commented a dozen times or so about how quickly life passes by.  It is truly like a “blink” when I look back.

James wrote that our life is just a mist that appears for a little while and then it’s gone!  I am getting mushy here, but I have been reminded of two very important things that I never want to forget:

1. Soak it up! - Because life is so short and the present becomes tomorrow’s memories way too fast, I want to enjoy every moment I have with my family and treasured friends God has blessed me with in this life.  I am determined to soak in each moment more fully and to appreciate how precious and brief every little experience is.

2. Make it count! – I want my life to matter!  I want to leave a legacy of integrity and honor.  More than anything else, I want to look back on my life and know with confidence that my life counted for the Kingdom.  I want Heaven to be more crowded because my mama gave birth to me.  My greatest fear is not failure – the real tragedy would be to never really try.

Life is short.  Soak it up.  Make it count.

4. Keep it simple

We will never, never, ever replace or improve upon the simple yet remarkably insurmountable task of making disciples that Jesus left as his marching orders for us.  There is no room for change-resistance, complacency, compromise, or complications.

The time we invest in accomplishing that purpose is really the only investment that yields kingdom dividends.  The rest is just wasted effort, tilting at windmills and settling for apparent short term gains that sacrifice the heart and intent of the kingdom focused portfolio.

Here’s the deal: over 1200 churches from over 25 countries are standing together in the month of June in a corporate series called One Prayer. Here’s the premise: pastors from all over will answer the question, “Pastor, if you had only one prayer to pray for the church at large, what would you pray?” These messages have been collected from several of the churches participating in the series. Over the series, churches will hear from their pastor, as well as other world class communicators via video!

That is AWESOME and unprecedented…and here’s why! The Church has not exhibited this kind of unity except perhaps in the 1st century and possibly other times of great persecution in history. Not only is there AMAZING unity, but the extent of the unity is larger than ever before possible…because of the technology that exists today!

The vast number and difference of groups who will participate in this is due primarily to the internet and technology advances in video and multimedia.  Without the benefit of modern technology, something like this would not be feasible!  The sheer expense of getting all these pastors to the places they will preach would be exorbitant!  Add to that the limitation of the time-space continuum…one person can only be in one place at one time. But because of technology, churches around the world can come together in unity and pastors can preach in a limitless number of places at one time!  WOW!

This is an incredible time to be alive to share the gospel!  Here’s a thought…Jesus wants all people to be saved (2 Pet 3:9).  He commanded us to go to the ends of the earth (do whatever it takes) with His message (Matt 28:19-20).  We should use all means necessary and available to do that!

…So here’s the thought:

If technology could be used as one of the most powerful tools for sharing the gospel, could we be working against an incredible move of God by failing to embrace it to the fullest?  And anytime we work against God…we know what that is…SIN!

Generosity is encouraged throughout scripture. Take a look at some of my favorite generosity references right here. Today, WAC took a huge step of faith to demonstrate the concept of generosity to our partners.

Here is an excerpt from the new blog at www.payitforward.cc that explains what happened:

“On April 27, 2008, Washington Avenue Church held our Sunday worship experience and continued the six week series on generosity titles “In God We Trust”. We met at our normal time, with our normal people, our normal pastor, and our normal praise & worship. What happened next was anything but normal!

Inspired by the actions of some other visionary leaders, the leadership of Washington Avenue felt compelled by God to take an extreme risk and display hazardous faith to creatively demonstrate the concept of generosity.

Near the conclusion of the service, the offering bags were passed around. What’s so unusual about that? Instead of people putting things in the baskets, everyone was instructed to take an envelope out. Every envelope contained varying amounts of cash. Some had $20, others $500.

When everyone had their envelope, these instructions were given:

• • You may not spend this money on yourself or your family.
  • You must use this money to bless someone else.
  • You cannot give the money to a church or organization.
  • Act in response to God’s generosity to you.

That’s it. $10,000 was distributed to everyone present that morning – members, attenders, 1st time guests, believers, and non-believers alike.

We had 544 566 (edit) people at Washington Avenue’s services yesterday and were hoping to see 400! We saw people accept Christ and experienced worship in a tangible way. Here is Chuck’s post about the services. I am convinced of one thing for certain from yesterday – sometimes my view of God is simply too small! Below are a few of the things I am celebrating from the weekend:

• A portable church in Canton, GA (Revolution Church) had 1400 in attendance and saw 20 salvations! That was on top of a ridiculous egg drop on Saturday that around 17,000 people showed up for! Here’s Gary’s post.
• Our friends at NewSpring in Anderson, SC saw more than 12,000 people come through and over 120 people meet Jesus! Perry blogged about it here.
• Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC (who are only two years old by the way) had more than 4800 at their services and…are you ready for this…500 people met Jesus!!! That is INSANE! Steven’s post about it is here.

Like I said, sometimes my expectations of the God of this universe are just too wimpy. God is at work all around and I am so pumped up to hear and read the stories of all the great things God is doing!

Yesterday, our team did and incredibly powerful creative movement during worship. Seriously, it was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced in a worship service. We saw this done by the team at Hillvue Church in Bowling Green, KY. My good friend Keith Scarborough is the Worship Pastor there. One of these days he is going to come around and start blogging – until then…he has a really cool staff page!

This girl came up to me in the Cafe’ and asked if there was some kind of card her friend could fill out? I asked what for and she said, “Well, I got my friend at school saved-ed and we thought we needed to tell somebody”. I asked her to tell me about her friend getting “saved-ed” and she explained it was because of her daddy.

A lot of people have been hit by this flu bug – some worse than others. This little girl’s whole family was down and they had to miss church. Since they were home the Dad pulled the family together and said that even thought they couldn’t be at church, they were still going to have church. They have a Bible Study time and then the dad gives them a challenge: if you will share Jesus with someone who doesn’t know him, I’ll give you $5 and take you bowling Friday night!

How awesome is that! Of course, as mature believers we share our faith out of love for and obedience to Jesus. This Dad is creatively equipping his kids to extend the love of Christ and engage their world with the life changing message of hope that is found only in Jesus! I think that’s awesome and love hearing and sharing e3 stories like that…look for more as I hear of them.

Dr. Caner says this: “Tradition is the living faith of dead men that has been passed down through generations”.  Jude says it’s the faith entrusted to all the saints. “Traditionalism is the dead faith of living men that says ‘We’ve never done it that way before’ – ‘You’re stretching me outside of my comfort zone’”.  This is precisely the kind of traditionalism that Jesus went of on time and time again.

I don’t want to ever be accused of doing something that’s different simply for the sake of being different.  We are all unique when it comes to personality and style.  At the same time, I don’t ever want to back down from an approach, an idea, or a conviction that I believe God can use, simply because that’s not the way we’ve always done it!

I don’t know about you, but I cherish every tradition and facet of the faith that has passed from generation to generation.  Many of the ‘old time favorites’ are favorites of mine.   What I do not cherish, are legalistic comforts that I still sometimes cling to that provide some sort of boundary for me to feel good about myself but do absolutely nothing to point someone to Jesus!  My life’s purpose is to do whatever I can to see that as many people stay out of hell as possible.  The rest is just window dressing.  What about you?

At church Sunday, we finished up our series “Unveiling the Vision” where we revealed our e³ strategy.  That’s basically our road map for how we execute the mission Jesus gave us in the Bible: “Doing whatever it takes to reach whoever we can with the hope we have in Jesus“. It’s pretty simple: three E’s: 

• Engage - Connect people to Jesus
• Equip – Connect people to community
• Extend – Connect people to service 

I am so pumped about this series!  I am also jacked from the responses we’ve received from so many people who “get it”!  It is so passed time for the Church to be acting like and thinking “It’s all about me” when people are dying and going to hell without Jesus! To quote my old football coach, “There’s no I in team” and there’s no I in church either!  Funny though, it’s right near the middle of “trad-I-tion“.

You know what?  It’s never been about us.  It has only, can only, and will ever be only about one person: JESUS!  Anything else is simply selfish and it’s sin – no matter how spiritual it sounds!  Here are a few examples:

• That’s not the way we do things here. Translation – I am more concerned with my personal preference and tradition than than with seeing God move in a powerful way. (The Pharisees did that here).
• Doing ministry like that is compromise. Translation – I boost my spiritual ego by adhering to legalistic principles that make me feel good about myself.  (Of course, Jesus calls us to live holy lives, but there will always be those who don’t get it!)
• I just want to go ‘deeper’! Translation – I am more concerned with knowing about Jesus than knowing Jesus. (This is an honest misstep, but being madly in love with Jesus like the Bible says here will motivate us to serve Jesus – not join another Bible study class!)
• You’re bringing the world into the church!  I can’t translate this one.  I just don’t get it.  I hope we are bringing the world into the church (engage), so that we can send the church (equip) into the world (extend).  Maybe I’m confused, but I thought that’s what this meant??

I could go on, but I won’t because the task ahead of us is too great.  People are on there way to hell, just like I was before I met Jesus, and there is no time to be distracted from the work at hand.  People need a savior.  His name is Jesus.  I have committed my life to telling as many people as I can about the hope that is found in Jesus Christ alone.  Beyond that, I could absolutely not care any less about what people think or say about me.  I have resolved to concern myself only with what Jesus thinks of me.  I don’t want to be one of these guys.  How about you?

One thing that is crystal clear.  God is showing this small group of believers that our task is not merely a goal that is set before us to travel across an ocean and share our faith and the gospel hope with those who have not heard – it is to walk across the room and share our faith with our neighbor.  Our quest is much more than fulfilling a command to share the love of Jesus with a hurting group of people in a village far from here – it is to share that same love with the guy we pass on the street corner, or the person in the booth behind us at the restaurant, or the lady pumping gas on the other side of the tank. 

Jesus called us to be witnesses!  Here.  Now.  Always.  Witnesses simply give an account of something they have seen and heard firsthand.  The problem is, the church today is often times more filled with prosecuting attorneys and judges in their regal robes than sincere witnesses to simply give their account.  A witness’ testimony is allowed in court as evidence.  Some people in the church only want to speak on God’s behalf – that’s called hearsay – and it’s inadmissible!  I believe that’s the stamp the world has placed on a lot of what the “church” has to say today.  Sorry – that’s inadmissible.

I know a lot of Christians (and I used to be one) who are well known by those around them for what they’re against.  How many people know what Jesus has done in my life?  That’s the question God has been leading me back to time and again – so I pose the question to you.  Do people know you for what you’re against or what you’re for?  If you had to define your life, are you a witness providing testimony, or are you sitting at the prosecution’s table?

They say that it’s in their DNA.  I like that.  Reaching the lost and making disciples is not just a goal of this church.  In fact, it’s not even the goal.  It goes deeper than that.  It is who they are! Attempting anything else would be akin to expecting a chicken to sit on your couch and bark like a dog.  It would require modification at the molecular level.

The priority of evangelism permeates everything they do.  It’s the barometer to measure the success of any ministry endeavor: is this ministry program or environment reaching lost people?  If not, they cut it.  Most of the things they try don’t work.  But the ones that do are reaching thousands with the message of the cross.

I pray for this kind of return to Biblical evangelism in our churches today!  What an impact that could be made for Jesus if we could make His purpose our purpose.  Not buildings.  Not programs.  Not budgets or even numbers.  Just a simple commitment to reach the unreached.  I bet it would look a lot different than many churches look today.  It requires an attitude of service and humility to reach those around you that are not necessarily like you. In Luke 19, Jesus sat down in fellowship with a group of people who were not at all like Him.  This day, it was tax collectors (could be biblical proof God is against the IRS since He did want Zacchaeus to repent) – another day it was a prostitute.  The church crowd gasped, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner”!  Jesus was like, “Uh, yeah?  That’s why I’m here guys.”  What flies at Hillvue, would not fly at many churches I can think of.  These guys are reaching the parts of the community that other churches don’t want, and that moves people out of their comfort zones.  Yet it is the very reason Jesus came and it is the life He modeled.  But then again, would Jesus really be welcome in a lot of our churches? Thank you Hillvue for staying your course and blazing a trail to inspire others.  Jesus might have had you guys in mind as an example when He said this in the sermon on the mount.  Keep doing what you’re doing!

And then there’s James.  James lives in the same complex as we do and last week he shared with me that he and his girlfriend would be moving.  They currently live with her mother and the situation has escalated to the point that they feel compelled to get out.  Now these two are a young couple who live in the world and like most, they have more than their share of difficulties.  James knows I’m a believer and last night we had a sort of lengthy conversation in the parking lot.  He asked me to pray for them and we swapped phone numbers.  To this point, our relationship has been more surface stuff.  We pass each other coming or going and give the typical guy nod by tilting your head back, arching your eyebrows, and kind of snapping it in an upward direction like you’re trying to shake something off your nose.  That’s the official guy greeting.  I don’t know where it came from.

We all know that God uses difficult circumstances and sometimes even tragedy to ultimately bring about good in our lives.  I don’t know what this couple will face.  I don’t know the extent of the damage to the family relationship.  I do know this – God wants these two to draw near to Him.  It is His desire that they would seek Him, love Him, and worship Him and I feel especially burdened for them.  Sure, my weekend was great and I AM excited about this week.  I can’t get these guys off my mind.  Would you join me in praying for this couple? 

Then a thought occured to me: What if nobody shows?  What if this thing is a big flop?  You better not post this, because then you’ll really look stupid when nobody comes! 

You know, it’s times like these that I’d really love to square off and pop the devil sqaure in the pie hole!  I hate this feeling – and I know it is directly from the bowels of hell. 

We have been faithful in our planning.  Have we been perfect?  Of course not!  But we will learn from our mistakes and improve next year.  The point is, at this stage, we have done what we know to do.  And to the best of our collective abilities, we have done as God directed us to do.  The pitch has left the pitcher’s fingertips.  It’s in that space between the mound and the batter.  There’s nothing else we can do.  It’s all up to God at this point.  Wait a minute – come to think of it – it’s been up to God all along!

What I know is this.  God has something cool in store for those who are there Saturday night.  We are going to exalt Jesus and present His message of hope and love.  We are going to do the same thing for 100 people that we will do for 10,000 people – that’s because we will worship the God of this universe.  As far as that goes, it’s an audience of 1.

My pastor, Chuck Bridges, began a series on prayer yesterday.  He opened with this statement: “Prayer should be like breathing for the believer”.  While I have spent time with my Lord, and sought His guidance about the Worship Rally, I wish that I could say that I invested an amount of time in prayer commensurate with the time spent planning and preparing for this event – but I can’t. Sure, I have petitioned God for His guidance, confessed my unworthiness, prayed for those who will attend, sought God’s anointing in my preaching, asked for strength and inspiration for all of our volunteers – but if prayer really was my oxygen, my O² levels would freak my doctor out!Now I have a strong prayer life, but the point I want to make is this. God expects us to do our part. I am fully convinced that a lazy spirit is not something that pleases an almighty God.  He expects us to do our part. To kick it in neutral and then sit back and say, “No worries! God will handle the details” is deplorable. That’s testing God and Satan tried to get Jesus to do precisely that.

What I am saying is that no amount of planning or preparing on our part compares with time spent talking with God about the situation! Prayer is most relevant and effective when we align our priorities with His. Jesus gave us come pretty strong clues regarding what His priority is and how we can pray about it (2 Pet 3:9, Luke 10:2). God wants people to be saved. He wants people to repent. He is in control of the Soul Harvest. We are to ask (pray) for the workers (that’s me and you) to go out.  I’ll do another post another time on our responsibility for personal evangelism. Right now, I’m asking you to pray for this harvest. The gospel will be presented.  Jesus will be praised and worshipped. Pray for opportunities to invite people. Bring anyone you know who might need to hear about the love and forgiveness Jesus offers.  Invite strangers and people you meet this week to join you next Saturday. You can bring people to a “concert” who would never darken the doors of a “church”. 

God is up to something.  I can’t wait to see what He does! We have prayed. We have planned. We have prepared. By God’s grace and His strength, we are ready.  The tendency is to let up now.  Please don’t do that.  Pray.  Pray now.  Pray hard.  Pray often.  Pray together.  Pray by yourself.  Pray when you wake up.  Pray when you go to bed.  Pray in your car.  Pray in the shower.  Pray without ceasing.  Pray again.  Just pray.
